Athens State University, offering coursework at the junior and senior level, is the baccalaureate degree granting institution
of the Alabama College System. Governed under the authority of the Alabama State Board of Education, and in conjunction with
the other institutions of the Alabama College System, Athens State University provides affordable education in an environment
which recognizes diversity and nurtures the discovery and application of knowledge. Located in northern Alabama, Athens State

- Athens State University is the oldest institution of higher education in Alabama 's state educational
system. The Institution was founded in 1822 by local citizens who purchased five acres of land, erected a building, and began
Athens Female Academy. Ownership of the school was transferred in 1842 to the Tennessee Conference of the Methodist Church .
With the birth of the North Alabama Conference of the Methodist Church in 1870, the Institution came under the jurisdiction
of that body.

The College of Business is nationally accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, and the
College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
- Athens State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools. The institution awards the baccalaureate degree.
