James declined an interview but, a friend, who claims he witnessed the incident, spoke up. "Justin and Shaheed didn't have nothing to do with it at all. They were all the way down the hallway when it happened," said MHC student Kevin Wright.College president Dan Lunsford insists Myers dorm is safe. "It just so happens we've had a disproportinate amount of incidents there," Lunsford said. But Lunsford said he is fed up with a recent streak of violent incidents there. "We are giving that particualar facility more attention than others." Including more dorm supervisors, surveillance cameras, and security patrols. Lunsford also made it clear Mars Hill College welcomes students of all backgrounds. "Some people assume that you shouldn't have those students here in the first place. The man they're accused of stealing from fired several shots at them. So far, Wayne Parton does not face charges related to the shooting. That has several of the players and their parents upset. Some even claim a cover up.Reached by phone Monday, offensive lineman Neal Dwyer, Jr. said, "we were going to a party and we got lost." So, the seven players stopped at the Red Barn on Highway 19 to get directions. Arrest reports indicate while the players were there, someone swiped a cooler of beer owned by Parton. Dwyer said that's when Parton emerged with a gun and "he started shooting." The players sped off, but several rounds hit their SUV. "All six rounds hit the car. The windows were shot out and it was bullet holes in the car. He emptied the whole clip," said Dwyer. Dwyer and his teammates escaped the gunfire uninjured. Dwyer said Parton too should've been arrested for shooting at them over a few cans of beer. "They said he was uder investigation but he wasn't arrested." The players posted bond and returned to school. They have not been suspended from the football team.
