Jacksonville mayor to address JU and EWC graduates (Florida Times-Union)

Mayor Alvin Brown will deliver the keynote address at Jacksonville University commencement on Saturday, and at the Edward Waters College commencement on May 12. More than 700 students will receive degrees during the JU commencement, which begins at 9:30 a.m. on the Science Green, behind the Howard Building near the heart of the campus. The university will honor Brown with an honorary doctorate of humane letters. The EWC commencement will be at 1 p.m. May 12 in the college's gymnasium, the Adams-Jenkins Community Sports and Music Complex. read more -

The recently published guest column by Jim Crooks provided a terrific overview of Jacksonville’s New Town Success Zone. As lead agency for foster care, adoption and family preservation services in Duval and Nassau counties, Family Support Services is a longtime partner in New Town and continues to provide many programs and services. We have been involved in Edward Waters College’s Schell-Sweet Community Resource Service Center in New Town since June 2009, providing more than $500,000 in services, staff and funding. read more -

Edward Waters College is a different place from the days when its current president, former Jacksonville Sheriff Nat Glover, was a student. In the early 1960s, EWC attracted most local black students whose dreams of higher education were restricted by segregation. Also back then, their career options were largely limited to teaching, a profession that was fed by a school system in which black teachers were needed to teach in second-class classrooms. Desegregation, however, changed all that. And for decades EWC has struggled to adapt. read more -
