School Notes:
  • The College’s goal is to graduate students with the ability to think analytically and creatively, and to write and speak effectively. Coker College began in 1894 as Welsh Neck High School when Major James Lide Coker (1837-1918) used his initiative and financial support to bring about the chartering of a private academy. In 1908, when South Carolina created a statewide public school system, Major Coker provided leadership for the conversion of the academy to Coker College for Women.
  • Coker places an emphasis on excellence in the liberal and creative arts and sciences by offering 31 majors and 22 minors. We also offer individual majors and double majors; self-designed degree programs; specializations; and pre-professional programs. Coker is an independent, comprehensive liberal arts college founded in 1908. The living and learning environment at Coker fosters participation in the community of scholarship and the development of ethical character, leadership skills and social responsibility.
  • Coker is located in Hartsville, SC, a 1996 All-America City located in the northeastern region of the state. Greater Hartsville has a population of 28,000. Hartsville is 25 miles from air and rail service in Florence, SC, where I-95 and I-20 intersect. Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand are 90 miles away; Columbia, the state capital, is 75 miles away; and Charlotte, NC, is 80 miles away.
  • U.S. News & World Report ranks Coker a "Best Comprehensive College in the South" for 2006. The magazine has named Coker a "Best College" for 10 consecutive years. The Princeton Review has selected Coker College a “Best Southeastern College” in its 2007 rankings based on academic excellence and student satisfaction. This is the third consecutive year the College has received this honor.
  • Coker College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097; phone: 404-679-4501) to award the baccalaureate degree. Coker is also accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and the South Carolina Board of Education. Coker College’s Bachelor of Social Work program is a candidate for accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education.
