The Inter-American University of Puerto Rico was founded on 1912 by the tejano missionary John Will Harris. In that then the Polytechnical Institute was known him as and occupied what today it is the Enclosure of San Germa'n. There elementary and secondary education was offered to young people of limited resources in a region mainly agriculturist. The first courses of university level were offered in 1921. 1944, the University became the first institution outside the United States in receiving the accreditation of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA).
The Inter-American University of Puerto Rico makes an effort to pay special attention to these traditional and nontraditional populations such as the first generation of college students in its families.
